Stepping on Legos? Crafting and school supplies spread throughout the house? Sound familiar? It does for me! We decided to transform our boring office into a multiuse room that the whole family can enjoy!
Making Use of a Multi-Use Room: A Lego/Crafting/Office Space

Five years ago, when we purchased this house, the office was a dark, muddy brown painted room. A west facing room with little lighting and dingy, worn-out carpet. While the carpet was replaced with all of the other carpeting on the 1st and 2nd flooring, I still had my work cut out for me.
Our original intent of the office was purely a place for our desk and extra couch. I decided to add a Lego and crafting space for the kids once I started reimagining the space. As a family, we do not usually keep any toys on the first floor so adding a crafting/Lego area was the compromise. Because of the new additions to the room, I had to forgo the couch in the room. I kept our old IKEA desk, chair, and cabinet to use again!
Next step was painting the room. I decided on a whim to paint it SW 7616 Breezy without even testing it on the wall. I was impatient and didn’t want to spend more money on little containers of sample paint. It turned out fine, but I could’ve been a bit more deliberate with the color I chose. I also added a painted white triangle on one side of the room to create some visual interest. You’ll be able to see part of it in the picture above.

After painting, I stole an IKEA Kallax cube storage system from our guest bedroom knowing I would probably go out and by the same one later to replace it. I love the Kallax systems by the way. They are strong, fairly scratch resistant and easy to put together by yourself! I also picked up two Trofast systems from IKEA. I planned to line these up on one wall after I measured the length of the wall and compared it to the two Trofast systems and the Kallax storage.

While I was at IKEA I picked up some peg boards, ped board accessories, and small desk lamps. After assembling the Trofast systems, the real work began on sorting Legos by color. Ugh, it’s actually the worst. Some people suggest sorting by block, my kids turned up their noses at that idea. So, we settled on the sort by color.

All of the sorted blocks went into the Trofast systems. Once the Legos were taken care of, I moved onto the craft items, The plan was to put them into the fabric/plastic cubes and other plastic storage from IKEA in the Kallax storage. With six cubes total, I sorted our craft and overflow Legos accordingly:
- All of the paper (construction, extra loose leaf, etc)
- Knitting & Beading Supplies
- Kid’s craft kits – usually gifts given to my kids that haven’t been opened yet
- Unopened Lego sets
- Special Mediums – Dry Erase Markers, Oil Pastels, Twistable Crayons, etc sorted into plastic pencil boxes or kept in their own box
- Crafting Findings- using a craft box from Michaels and some gallon size resealable bags I sorted pipe cleaners, pom poms, wooden sticks, googly eyes, stickers, ribbon, etc.
I used the other plastic storage bins (also IKEA) to sort out all of the crayons, markers, glue sticks, pencils, colored pencils, acrylic & watercolor paints, and pens. Before this project, everything was in its own box or bag and just all over the place. This was a good exercise to also decide what was actually going to get used in the future. If I knew it wasn’t, I threw it out or donated it.
The final step was to hang the peg boards, plug in the lights, and set up the Lego base plates. Of course, we had to move our beloved goat painting to the area to give it a fun vibe. Here is the final result!

I am still not completely finished with this room. I still plan on adding shelving for the kids to display their Lego masterpieces! I am also thinking about putting labels on everything. I just need to get a Cricut – my handheld labeler is just not cutting it any longer. I will provide updates as I complete them!
Let me know what you think below! Do you have any other suggestions to help sort out a crafting/Lego/office?
